Campers in the works…

Here we go… Camper life is strong in the studio right now. This week I have been diving deep into finishing these two campers that I began construction on about 4 months ago!

The trailer is modeled after the Argosy that currently sits at the Enchanted Circle Campground in Angel Fire, New Mexico.

This trailer was a product of the Airstream Company and I found some interesting facts about this sort of illusive product…

“According to the October 1972 sales report, the new factory produced 10 travel trailers a day and had begun shipping to dealers around the United States and Canada. One Argosy had even been shipped to a dealer in Germany”

Another few fun notes worth including:

“Airstream management hoped that the Argosy customer would embrace the RV lifestyle and eventually trade up to own an Airstream. Although Argosy owners were not initially eligible for membership in the Wally Byam Caravan Club, it was advertised that the Argosy was part of “the Airstream pedigree.”

“Perhaps one of the most significant product innovations to occur in the Argosy line was the 1974 introduction of the Argosy Motorhome. As the company’s first foray into the motorhome market, the shape of the Argosy Travel Trailer was adapted to fit the drive-train of the new Chevrolet chassis.

These quotes were made possible by the lovely history of the product provided here.

Today I just finished up the wet work on this little mobile home which is based on the 1937 Roy Hunt Housecar, with some creative differences.

What I liked about the Hunt Housecar was the interesting story of how it came to be and the inspiration it provided within the RV and mobile home community. While doing research, I discovered that it was a custom build by a Hollywood director who wanted to have all the amenities of home while working long days or weeks on various sets.

Aside from the cool look of this little home on wheels I was stunned to also learn that this was one of the first mobile homes to have a working shower on it!

Anyway I am praying to the kiln gods that they both fire up nicey nice and I can apply to a show or two with them, I will be sharing more soon, but feel free to leave a note and tell me what you think!
